- Description
- Increasingly, knowledge sharing or knowledge transfer is found at the centre of academic and practitioner discussion on knowledge management. As part of these discussions research is further emphasising the importance of social capital as a key requirement if organisations are to realise knowledge sharing especially as related to the sharing of tacit knowledge, or know how. One socialisation mechanism reported to increase an organisations social capital and by extension, levels of knowledge sharing, are social networks. Such networks can be formally established be management or occur informally through the organisation. This paper, using interview data collected from managers from Emencorp (pseudonym), a foreign owned MNC operating in the hospitality industry in Australia, takes a closer look at informally established social networks and their impact on knowledge sharing within the context of the organisation. In doing so, interplays between the establishment and knowledge sharing outcomes of the informal networks and HR practices will be considered. Results, while offering some support for mainstream literature that while informally established networks can engage organisational actors in knowledge sharing, also indicate that they may simultaneously act against it due to the barriers inherently created in the original formation of the networks. The paper suggests that some HR practices may assist in reducing these barriers.
